FAQs

What is a universal changing table?

A universal changing table, also known as an adult changing table, provides safe, hygienic, and dignified access to public restrooms for individuals with disabilities or other medical needs who may not be able to use standard handicapped accessible restrooms. While baby changing tables are too small for older children and adults, universal changing tables provide safe and equitable restroom access to all. They are an essential step toward inclusion and equality and can transform the lives of millions of Americans with limited mobility or who need help with daily self-care.

Advocacy Groups

Both internationally and here in the United States, the Changing Spaces Campaign has fought to raise awareness around the need for adjustable-height universal changing tables in public restrooms. Its state chapters have been instrumental in both driving legislation and getting tables installed at the grassroots level, and its UCT Map is an invaluable resource for locating accessible facilities across the United States. Foundations is proud to support Changing Spaces and its mission to promote community inclusion, access, and equality for individuals with disabilities who cannot safely utilize standard accessible restrooms.
